According to Renegade Kid’s co-founder, Jools Watsham, the developer’s first Nintendo eShop title – Mutant Mudds – will be followed up by a sequel, set to launch on the eShop sometime in early 2013.
The original Mutant Mudds was developed by Renegade Kid, and remains one of the finest titles available in the eShop library. The nostalgic gameplay and charming visuals were just two of the key factors that attracted gamers, but the perfect execution of the basic mechanics and the addictive nature of the game are what ultimately made it an instant classic. I gave it an 8.5/10 in my original review, posted on Game Freaks 365.
The second Mutant Mudds is still based on the same 2D platforming design, but the game will feature some notable changes. Most importantly, it sounds like it will be a bit longer: like the original, there are five worlds, but the sequel adds an additional “boss stage” in each one. You’re forced to defeat the boss character and clear each stage before new levels can be opened up.
That’s all that is currently known about the Mutant Mudds sequel; Renegade Kid is in the process of finishing Bomb Monkey and ATV Wild Ride 3D, its two upcoming eShop downloads. Bomb Monkey will arrive sometime soon (end of June/start of July), while ATV 3D follows sometime in the fall.
There is a good chance that we won’t hear a lot about the next Mutant Mudds for a while, but I definitely have every intention of passing along any new information as it is revealed. Until then, if you haven’t yet, you should check out the Mutant Mudds demo on the eShop and see for yourself just why this old-school side-scroller is so strangely satisfying.
